The last suspended Jean-Kévin Augutin scored a Joker goal par excellence to perfect RB Leipzig’s second victory of the season in the Bundesliga. The 21-year-old Frenchman scored six minutes on Wednesday evening, after he had come onto the field for the unlucky German national striker Timo Werner, to the 2-0 (1-0) final against VfB Stuttgart. The first goal in front of 32,187 spectators was scored in the Red Bull Arena by defence chief Willi Orban in the injury time of the first half (45.+1).
With eight points, the Red Bulls climbed to eighth place in the league before the explosive duel next Saturday at 1899 Hoffenheim with designated RB coach Julian Nagelsmann. The victorious VfB remains under coach Tayfun Korkut with two points table penultimate.
It wasn’t a glittering start, even though the RB fans did not join the Germany-wide mood boycott and in contrast to the 1700 initially silent VfB supporters cheered on their team loudly. On the grass it remained rather calm on both sides for the time being. The VfB put the Leipziger under pressure early on, undermined the feared fast game of the RB team, in which the two newcomers compared to the starting eleven at the 1-1 away against Eintracht Frankfurt mainly initially set accents.
On the left defender’s post, international Marcel Halstenberg was back in the starting line-up for the first time since 17 December 2017. Like Nordi Mukiele on the right, the 26-year-old was on the offensive again and again. After his suspension, the Frenchman returned to the starting eleven for disciplinary offences, and Augustinm first had to sit on the bench. Nevertheless, Rangnick offered a top-class offensive – at least nominally in Werner, Emil Forsberg, Yussuf Poulsen and Marcel Sabitzer.
Werner in particular was without luck. After a perfect pass from Mukiele, he could not place the ball from close range in the VfB box (23.). His shot after a solo worth seeing (31.) was not enough to overcome Ron-Robert Zieler in the VfB goal. So defensive boss Orban had to go in the best dusting manner. The Stuttarter, who after half an hour allowed the Leipzigers much more, clarified after a corner only insufficiently, Kevin Kampl pulled like some minutes before from the distance. Zieler could not hold the ball and also let it slide into the middle, where captain Orban was on the spot. The Stuttgart team only had one chance in the first half with Mario Gomez (37). When it looked as if Werner had scored his 50th Bundesliga goal, the video assistant slowed down the cheering of the 22-year-old and the fans in the second half. Before he had started his solo in the 58th minute, Werner had accepted the ball in offside position. In the 74th minute Rangnick took the goalscorer out and brought Augustin. And seconds after his substitution he almost added the desired second goal, but the ball bounced back from the inner post into the field. Shortly after, he was in the goal, the ball, and Augustin cheered.
